Conservation District Day is July 17
What Is Conservation District Day?
Conservation District Day recognition underscores the vital role conservation efforts play in maintaining our our natural resources and promoting sustainable practices, including soil erosion control, water quality improvement, habitat restoration, and sustainable agricultural practices. For Michigan districts, Conservation District Day commemorates the anniversary of Public Act 297 of 1937, Michigan’s first Soil Conservation District law.
On this day, we celebrate the collective work that has been done so far and look forward to a bright future in conservation together. Conservation Districts across Michigan have been at the forefront of numerous initiatives. Most notably, many conservation districts and area producers reduce nonpoint source pollution via Section 319 of the Clean Water Act , which funds producers for planting cover crops, buffer strips and pollinator habitats, among other practices. Another conservation route is MAEAP, a voluntary program that helps farmers adopt cost-effective practices that reduce erosion and runoff into ponds, streams, and rivers with funding coming from fertilizer and pesticide fees in 2011.
