With the completion of the first phase of the Lake Charlevoix Watershed Project, conducting a comprehensive inventory to identify existing sources of pollution and potential threats to water quality, we are now in phase two.
The Charlevoix Conservation District has entered into contracts with the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality (M.DEQ) for implementation activities.
Clean Michigan Initiative grant
The main goals are as follows:

  1. Aquatic life & wildlife--to protect the diversity of aquatic habitats within the watershed by reducing the contribution of sediment, nutrient and toxic pollutants.
  2. Cold water fishery--to reduce sediment & nutrient loads which threaten to harm habitat conditions for the cold water fishery in Lake Charlevoix & it's tributaries.
  3. Partial or total body contact--to maintain the excellent recreational opportunities in the rivers & Lake by reducing sediment & nutrient contributions.
EPA Section 319 grant
The main goals are as follows:
  1. Implement priority recommendations to reduce & prevent nonpoint source pollution to Lake Charlevoix & it's watershed.
  2. Implement information & education programs targeted towards priority problems & audiences.
  3. Involve the community in the implementation project.

The proposed goals & objectives will be accomplished using a partnership approach. The tasks will be divided among partners, based on experience and expertise.
