In 1986, the Charlevoix Conservation District established a beachgrass nursery to provide a local source of plant material for landowners in Northern Lower Michigan. With 20,000 beachgrass plugs purchased from another conservation district, on land leased from the Department of Natural Resources (located in Fishermans Island State Park), the District began it's beachgrass nursery.
In 2 1/2 years, the area filled in and was ready to harvest. The spring and fall harvests of 1989 totaled 14,500 plants. The spring and fall harvests of 2002 totaled 93,250 plants. Overall, since the first harvest in 1989, the Charlevoix Conservation District has provided 560,500 plugs of beachgrass to stabilize sand dunes and prevent erosion.
