Since it's conception in 1948, the Charlevoix C.D. office has been located in Boyne City. Until they moved to Petoskey in 1995, office space was shared with the USDA agency, Soil Conservation Service (now the Natural Resources Conservation Service). In 1996 the District had to begin renting office space.
All that changed in April 2000 when a phone call to the DNR inquiring about renting the old DNR Field Office, resulted in the acquisition of the property/buildings. Our thanks to Senator Walter North and Representative Andy Neumann who both offered their assistance and supported the District proposal.
January 5, 2001, Senate Bill N0.1365 was signed by Governor Engler making it official. Soon after, the Charlevoix Conservation District received the deed for the property located at 303 North Street in Boyne City. This conveyance is subject to the following stipulation: That the property shall be used exclusively for the purpose of office facilities for the Charlevoix Conservation District and that upon termination of that use or use for any other purpose, the State may reenter and repossess the property, terminating the grantee's estate in the property.
Work began immediately to renovate the building which had been vacant for almost 10 years. The "new" District Office opened for business June 1, 2001. Please, stop by and see what it looks like now! We are very pleased and proud of how it turned out.
